What to expect during your initial appointment

The process for diagnosis of sleep disorders can be quite lengthy and require numerous appointments and at least some time and effort on the part of the patient in order to be successful.

This initial appointment includes:

  • A review of your lifestyle and environment
  • Medical and sleep history as well as your physical condition
  • Recommendations that may be simple steps you can implement without further assistance.

If your situation is more complex, it may require a monitored sleep study which will indicate if treatment is necessary.

Once you and your care provider have determined a sleep study is right for you

You will need to contact your insurance provider to inquire whether or not a sleep study is a covered service for your specific plan. If It Is not a covered service, please notify our staff immediately.

Our staff will begin processing a sleep study packet on your behalf. The findings of your Initial evaluation will be reviewed by a sleep specialist and any questions and concerns will be addressed before the study can be scheduled. We may also contact your Insurance company for a prior-authorization, if needed. This process may take several weeks. Our staff will call to schedule your study when the process Is complete. If you have not heard from us after 3 weeks, please call back so that we can follow-up.

On the night of your study

Please follow all directions (noted below) and make sure to bring the sleep aid (if prescribed) with you. The technologist will prepare you for the study and answer any questions you may have.

Follow these tips when coming in for a sleep study

  • Follow your normal routine, but do not nap during the day of the test.
  • Avoid beverages containing caffeine from noon on. If you are on regular medications bring them with you. We do not dispense medications.
  • Fill sleep medication (if prescribed) PRIOR TO REPORTING FOR YOUR SLEEP STUDY. Do not take sleeping pill until directed to do so by the sleep technician.
  • You may bring toiletry items, and sleep wear. A shower will be available. You may also want to bring a pillow of your own, as it may help you sleep better.
  • PLEASE WASH YOUR HAIR THE DAY OF THE TEST, and avoid using hairspray or other products. We will be applying electrodes to your head and these items may interfere with their operation.
  • Your test will end around 6:00 AM.
  • Please remember to get PRE-AUTHORIZATION if your insurance requires you to do so. Your sleep study is an outpatient procedure.
  • If you will be unable to come for the test, please cancel as soon as possible.

Once your study is complete

  • Your results will be sent to the Billings Clinic Sleep Disorders Center to be scored and interpreted by a sleep specialist. This process usually takes about 2 weeks, but may take up to 4 weeks. In some cases, a second study may be required to determine the optimum pressure needed for effective treatment. In this case, you will be notified and scheduled for the second study (usually called a titration) and, if prescribed, a second sleep aid will be ordered.
  • You will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment with your provider 2 to 4 weeks from the night of your study to go over results. If you are diagnosed with a sleep disorder, your provider will discuss treatment with you at the follow-up visit and prescribe treatment. In most cases, this will be a continuous positive airway pressure machine, known as a CPAP.
  • You will need to choose a durable medical equipment (DME) provider In the area to get your CPAP machine, tubing and supplies. There are 3 companies In the Cody area, West Park Hospital, Rotech and Uncare. Your provider will give you a written prescription that you can take to one of these companies to get your equipment.
  • Once you have received your equipment you will need to wear it a minimum of 4 hours per night, at least 80% of nights. Your machine will keep track of your usage.
  • You will have another appointment with your provider after you have had your equipment for no less than 30 days, and no more than 90 days. At this appointment, your provider will evaluate your compliance (how much you are using your equipment) by reviewing the compliance report from your machine. This report should be printed by your equipment provider and brought to the appointment. Your provider will ask you questions about how the CPAP machine affects your life, for Instance whether It has improved your sleep, energy level, etc.
  • Your provider will need to see you every year and document compliance In order for you to continue with your treatment. This will require an annual appointment and a review of the compliance report from your machine that you will need to bring with you each year.
