Acute Care Medical Surgical Specialty Units

  • The Acute Care Inpatient Cancer Care Unit (ICC) is a 26-bed specialty Medical/Surgical/Oncology unit. Our unit provides care to adults in various stages of their cancer diagnosis; this includes pre/post-surgical procedures, administering chemotherapy, symptom management from chemotherapy, and pain management. Other oncology patients include gynecology/oncology patients. Our unit also cares for general medical/surgical patients such as CHF, COPD, Diabetes, various pre & post-op patients, as well as palliative care and end of life care. RNs hired on to ICC are expected to become chemotherapy/biotherapy certified through ONS within the first year of hire.
  • The Acute Care Inpatient Medical Unit (IPM) is a 38-bed specialty hospital unit that provides comprehensive medical care to a variety of complex patients. Our unit specializes in caring for patients requiring acute or chronic care for conditions including but not limited to gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory conditions, uncontrolled metabolic disorders, infectious processes, neurological disorders, complex wound care, amputations, surgical procedures, renal and hepatic disorders, and alcohol/substance use disorders.
  • The Acute Care Inpatient Surgical Unit (IPS) is a 36-bed specialty unit that provides post-operative care for a variety of patients undergoing complex procedures. We work closely with an interdisciplinary team of professionals who collaborate as a team to provide the best patient centered care for our patients. The length of stay for our patients depends on the type of surgery they have. Our surgeries include solid organ, trauma surgery, emergency surgery, general surgery, gynecological, urologic, bariatric, colorectal and others. We are a fast-paced unit that believes that exceptional care of the surgical patient embodies excellent clinical skills intertwined with compassionate care to achieve maximum quality of life.
  • The Orthopedic-Neurosciences Unit (ONU) specializes in providing outstanding care for complex Orthopedic and Neuroscience patients within our acute care 35-bed specialty Unit. We are certified in Total Joint Care, and Comprehensive Stroke Care allowing us to provide evidence-based practices to help care for all Ortho and Neuro patients in our community and region. Patients we care for on ONU include trauma injuries, total joint replacements, complex fracture repairs, seizures , spinal surgeries, total brain injuries, craniotomies, and strokes.

Critical Care Services

  • The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a state-of-art 28-bed mixed medical-surgical ICU which serves all adult specialties requiring intensive care. We specialize in critical medical disease or illness, such as sepsis, respiratory failure, renal replacement (CRRT), COVID, cardiovascular surgery, such as coronary bypass and valve surgery, complex cardiac care such as post-cardiac arrest and ventricular assist support services such as intra—aortic balloon pump, neurosurgical medical and neurotrauma care, adult and pediatric trauma, complex general surgical care, organ donation, and advanced modalities including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • The Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) specializes in providing care for more complex and longer-term patients in a modern, healing, and state-of-the-art 28-bed unit. IMC will provide care for patients with high-acuity needs, serving as a bridge between the Intensive Care Unit, where the most critical patients are cared for, and Medical/Surgical inpatient units.
  • The Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) is a 29-bed Progressive Care unit. We specialize in the holistic care of adults with complex Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic issues. We provided evidence base care for medical management as well as pre and post procedure care.

Emergency Services

  • Emergency and Trauma Center (ED) is the only Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stoke Center in Montana! 36-bed, 50,000+ annual ED volume, high acuity 24-hour adult and pediatric Emergency Department with an average daily census of 140 patients. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program since 2001. Robust New Grad RN program and active unit council. Team care says it all!
  • Billings Clinic MedFlight operates fixed-wing rotor-wing aircraft that have teams comprised of registered nurses, respiratory therapists, and paramedics. We respond to calls for prehospital, adult, pediatric, maternal and NICU patient transports completing an average of 1000 missions annually. Clinical teams are supported by 24/7 medical control, national specialty certification requirements, and ongoing education and training.

Nursing Resources

Nursing Resources is primarily medical surgical based support to our MedSurg units – IPS, IPM, ONU, and ICC.  However, depending on experience and cross-training, we also support Pre-Post Op, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Cardiovascular Unit (CVU), Inpatient Pediatrics (IPU), Inpatient Psych, Critical Care, Radiology, Endoscopy, and the Emergency Department.  We support a wide reach across the organization to fill in staffing vacancies, skill set needs, sick calls, leaves of absence, and vacation times for unit-based staff.

Perioperative/ Procedural Services

  • Our Cardiac Catheterization Lab utilizes cutting edge technology and is a highly functioning team made up of RN’s and Techs to provide patient-centered care for adults needing diagnostic/interventional cardiac, electrophysiology, and structural heart procedures. Some of the procedures we perform are, but not limited to, heart caths, A STEMI (ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction), heart failure, Electrophysiology Procedures (EP) studies, Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), device implantation, Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), Mitraclip, Watchman, and Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)/ Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) closures.
  • The Endoscopy department is a fast-paced procedural area that offers a variety of scope guided procedures using state-of-the-art equipment, with a focus on patient centered care. The procedures that can be found performed in the endoscopy department include, Colonoscopies, Upper GI endoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic ultrasound, and Peg tube placement. Nursing staff in the endoscopy department become specialized in pre-procedural admitting, intra-procedural circulating/sedation nurse, and post-procedural recovery. The nurse-to-patient ratio varies on the type of procedures being performed and acuity of both adult and pediatric patients. The endoscopy department allows each nurse their own autonomy while also being heavily driven by teamwork.
  • The Main OR has 15 Operating Rooms and a Hybrid Operating Room providing services for Orthopedics, Cardiovascular, Vascular Surgery, General/Bariatric Surgery, Trauma, Neurosurgery, Robotic Surgery, Gynecology, Gynecology Oncology, Genitourinary, and ENT.
  • The Surgery Center offers outpatient surgeries in 8 Operating Rooms in a 23-hour facility. Specialty areas that perform outpatient surgical procedures in the Surgery Center, include Ear, Nose and Throat, Facial Plastics, General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Podiatry, Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Care, and Urology.

Psychiatric Services

Psychiatric Services is a 49-bed unit serving both adult and youth populations. We have both inpatient and observation levels of care based on the patient’s needs.  We serve patients from across Montana, North Dakota, and parts of Wyoming assisting them through any mental health concerns. Our nurses rotate between all three of our units allowing for variation from day to day as well as gaining knowledge of a wide variety of all psychiatric diagnoses.

Women’s and Children’s Services

  • Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) is a 23-bed unit where the entire birth experience for our families occur in one room. Our unit has an OB ED for those unplanned emergencies as well as assessment of labor. On our LDRP unit, patients receive triage, antepartum, labor, operative, post-partum, and couplet care services. It is our mission to provide family and patient centered care at all times.
  • Inpatient Pediatrics (IPU) is a dedicated unit to our patients who range from 0 to 17 years old. IPU provides specialized care to both patients and families during their time of need. Our team is dedicated to meeting the needs of our patients throughout their ages and stages.
  • Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is 18-bed Level III (b) unit that cares for critically ill infants from 25-weeks gestation and up. Currently we are building a brand new, state of the art NICU where we will be able to care for 22 -25 patients and their families.

Clinical Departments - Billings

  • Primary Care/SameDay Care: Billings Clinic Primary Care provides direct patient care at three clinics in Billings and includes family medicine, internal medicine, geriatrics, and the internal medicine residency program. The three clinics are in different areas of Billings including the West End, Downtown, and the Heights. We are a Patient Centered Medical Home that strives to offer the highest quality of care for the entire family. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of Physicians, APPs, Care Managers, RNs, LPNs, MA’s, and CMA’s. Additionally, we have three SameDay Care locations in Billings to care for both established and non-established patients with acute illness who need same day access. These locations care for patients of all ages with minor illnesses and injuries like flu, coughs, colds, sore throat, sprains, lacerations and other minor ailments. Patients presenting to these areas are often triaged by the RN to ensure appropriate level of care. All locations have onsite x-ray and lab access, and staff are well trained to perform a variety of skills to care for patients.
  • Specialty Care: Billings Clinic has over 50 specialty departments. These outpatient departments provide care for adult and pediatric patients with specific healthcare conditions, requiring specialized care. Care in these areas is provided by a multidisciplinary team that can include Physicians, APPs, RNs, RDs, LCSW, LPNs and CMAs. The care teams utilize the latest healthcare advancements to manage specific conditions. Nurses working in these clinical settings have opportunity to advance their practice and specialize within a desired area of healthcare. Departments with nurses include:
