High Reliability Organizing
What is high reliability organizing?
Organizations that adopt high-reliability organizing operate in complex, high-hazard domains for extended periods without serious accidents or catastrophic failures.
Why is Billings Clinic committed to high reliability organizing?
The safety of our patients, employees, and guests is our top priority. By practicing behaviors that reduce human error rates, actively fixing system defects, and creating a positive patient experience, we consistently deliver the highest quality health care every time.
What have we done through 2021?
After training fifty-five employees to become trainers, including fifteen medical providers, we held one week of in-person training sessions. We then pivoted to a virtual training platform in response to the SarS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. The creativity and passion of our trainers continued to light our path as we successfully trained ninety-seven percent of our employees! The leadership at Billings Clinic also underwent additional training, and our journey now strives to embed the error prevention behaviors throughout our system.
Throughout 2021, as the pandemic continued, we administered engagement surveys to our entire workforce and a safety culture survey to clinical work settings. With the results and follow-up debriefs to inform our improvement efforts, we have continued to march the path to high reliability in the implementation of a daily management system. A daily management system provides the tools for strategy coordination, essential communication, and equitable engagement throughout the Billings Clinic system.
